Gymnast of the Week

It’s that time of the year again--NCAA Gymnastics Championships!! This weekend, the women will face off in Cleveland, Ohio and the men will meet in Columbus, Ohio. This week, instead of featuring one legendary gymnast this week, gymnast of the week is featuring it’s first ever entire team, the University of Utah Red Rocks.

The Red Rocks, most noteably known for their spectacular show of gymnastics, won the first ever NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship back in 1981 and have since made an appearance at every championship, the only team to ever do so. The coach that coached them to their first ever NCAA title was Greg Marsden, and amazingly, Greg Marsden is still the coach today. Marsden also coaches with his wife, Megan Marsden who had been assistant coach since 1985, and in 2009 was named co-head coach.

The team holds an impressive number of records including: the longest regular home season winning streak out of any NCAA sport at 23 years (1979-2002) and 170 meets, most All-American gymnast awards with a total of 304, and have won 10 national championships (tied with Georgia) at 10. They also tie for the record for most consecutive NCAA Championship wins with 5, from 1982-1986.

Since the start of NCAA Championships, the Red Rocks have had 5 all-around champions, 4 vault champions, 2 uneven bar champions, 5 balance beam champions, including national team member Ashley Postell, and 1 floor champion.

Not only does Utah hold a number of records for wins, longest standing coach, and a variety of other records, they also hold the attendance record and average over 10,000 fans per meet, which has been consistent for the past 20 years.

The Utah Red Rocks gymnastics team is one of the most successful collegiate teams in the country, and has been since the start of NCAA Championships. Look for the number 8 ranked Red Rocks this weekend in Cleveland!
