Meet the World Teams: United States Women's Team

The U.S women’s World Team is now set! We will be seeing Gabrielle Douglas, Anna Li, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Alicia Sacramone, Sabrina Vega and Jordyn Wieber with non-traveling alternate Shawn Johnson! And one of the seven gymnasts named to the team will be named as an alternate once they're in Tokyo.

For most, the surprise is Vega and Douglas making the team and odds are one of them will be the alternate. My guess is that Vega will be the alternate because the team needs strong bar workers and Douglas can hit for them there. Many thought that Chellsie Memmel and Shawn Johnson would be locks. Even so, this is a diverse line up that could work very well for team U.S.A.

As we don’t know the results from the training camps, we can only predict who will compete on each apparatus for team U.S.A based on their performances at Visa Championships.

Here is how I think the team will break down:

Team Prelims:

Vault: Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Alicia Sacramone, Gabrielle Douglas
Uneven Bars: Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Gabrielle Douglas, Anna Li
Balance Beam: Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Alicia Sacramone, Anna Li
Floor Exercise: Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Alicia Sacramone, Gabrielle Douglas

This team is set on vault. Wieber and Maroney will perform a two and a half twisting Yurchenko and can possible score 16s. Maroney is also this years national champion on vault. There is the possibility that Raisman may also perform it. Sacramone is the current World Champion on vault and will perform a front handspring layout one and a half that can score as high as 15.800. And Douglas can do a very nice double twisting Yurchenko.

As we have seen, this team’s biggest struggle will be the uneven bars. Wieber, Douglas and Li’s scores will definitely count toward the team final. They can all score in the low 15s which is what the U.S needs. Maroney’s score will most likely count unless Raisman hits.

The balance beam line up is very strong. We can get 15s from Wieber and Sacramone and high 14s from Raisman. Li's score will more than likely not be counted as Maroney is may have a slight edge over her.

Floor Exercise is also strong this year. Wieber can score a 15.000 with Raisman, Maroney, Sacramone being able to score in the mid 14s. Douglas' score would most likely not be counted.

I am more than confident that as long as they hit, team U.S.A will place in the top 8 and advance to the London Olympics next year.

Team Final:

Vault: Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney, Alicia Sacramone
Uneven Bars: Jordyn Wieber, Gabrielle Douglas, Anna Li
Balance Beam: Jordyn Wieber, Alicia Sacramone, Anna Li
Floor Exercise: Jordyn Wieber, Alexandra Raisman, McKayla Maroney

Bases on their performances at Visa Championships, this is how the scoring will breakdown.

Vault: 15.950, 16.000, 15.800
Uneven Bars: 15.200, 14.900, 15.050
Balance Beam: 15.300, 15.200, 13.850
Floor Exercise: 15.000, 14.800, 14.150

The U.S team total would be 181.200. That would be enough to beat Russia by 5.803 based on last year’s World Championships results. It seem that even if these scores are lower than expected, it might be enough to win gold depending on how much China, Romania and Russia have improved.

The U.S Women’s team won gold at the 2003 and 2007 Worlds leading into the Olympics those years. So if the team wants a good omen, this may be it. U.S.A Gymnastics could surprise us again and completely switch up who is expected to compete on each apparatus. No matter the final line up, the women’s team looks to be set to take the World by storm.
