Meet the Olympians: Viktoria Komova
Viktoria Komova, Team Russia

Viktoria Komova is one of the members on the 2012 Russian Olympic team. She is from Voronezh, Russia. Komova is coached by Gennadiy Yelfimov and Olga Bulgakova and is part of the Dynamo Sports Club. Komova's execution in her skills reflect the grace and flexibility that the gymnasts from the Soviet Union presented. With her "Soviet style" of gymnastics, Komova made herself one to watch at the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore. She took gold in the all-around, vault, and beam as well as earning a bronze in the floor exercise.

Recently, Komova was competing neck and neck with Jordyn Wieber at the 2011 World Championships. Wieber (59.382) ended up beating Komova (59.349) in the all-around by just .033 points. However, she took gold on what is said to be her best event, the uneven bars. Komova's accomplishments at this meet signified the beginning of a strong comeback after suffering an ankle injury in 2010, which required surgery only months before the 2011 World Championships.

Interesting Facts:
  • Komova is the daughter of 1985 World Champion Vera Kolesnikova. Kolesnikova competed for the Soviet Union, which earned gold in the all-around, vault, floor exercise and team finals.
  • Komova is currently one of four gymnasts that have a D score of 7.0 on the uneven bars.
  • Some stand out skills in her bar routine are a piked Tkatchev, a layed out Jaeger and a double double dismount which gets amazing height.
  • She has her own skill on the uneven bars, which is named after her. The "Komova" is an inside stalder Shaposhnikova with a 1/2 turn.
  • On the balance beam some of her harder skills are a standing Arabian and a Patterson dismount.
  • A lot of her inspirtation for her graceful and balletic style comes from her choreographers.
  • When asked if she had any role models Komova said "I try to be like myself"
