Hambuechen Earns High Bar Gold In Baku Event Finals

The 2015 European Games men’s event finals have concluded in Baku. Spain’s Rayderley Miguel Zapata Santana earned the gold on the floor exercise with a 15.333. On pommel horse, Saso Bertoncelj of Slovenia won the gold with a 14.966. Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece took first on rings with a 15.633. Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine secured the title on vault, averaging a 15.266. Home crowd favorite, Oleg Stepko of Azerbaijan earned the gold on parallel bars with a 15.733. Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen won the high bar final with a 15.533.

On floor exercise, Zapata Santana impressed the crowed with an opening pass of roundoff one and a half twist to an Arabian double front, earning a 15.333. Hambuechen took the silver with a 15.100 and Russia’s David Belyavskiy received bronze with a 15.000.

In the pommel horse competition, Stepko earned silver with a 14.600, behind Saso Bertoncelj's 14.966. Great Britain’s Brinn Bevan took bronze with a 14.200.

The men then moved to the rings where Petrounias was victorious with a 15.633, and Nikita Ignatyev of Russia came in second with a 15.333. Ibrahim Colak of Turkey was third with a 15.133, which was the first Artistic Gymnastics medal for Turkey in these Games.

In an exciting vault competition, Verniaiev’s 15.266 performance was highlighted by an enormous Dragulescu with just a small step. Casimir Schmidt of the Netherlands took the silver with a 15.116, competing a Tsuk triple twist and a front handspring on, two and a half twist off. Stepko earned bronze with an average of 14.966.

It was a tight race on the parallel bars, as Stepko edged out Belyavskiy 15.733 to 15.700. Marius Berbecar of Romania took the bronze with a 15.600.

Concluding on the high bar, Hambuechen earned gold with a 15.533, Vlasios Maras of Greece took silver with a 15.366, and Ignatyev received bronze with a 15.166.
