The No. 8 Michigan Wolverines were back in Stegeman Coliseum tonight, where they won the 2014 NCAA Regional just nine months ago.  They had the same success this weekend by winning over the No. 7 Georgia Gym Dogs.  The Wolverines defeated the Gym Dogs 196.60-196.50.  The Wolverines lead throughout this whole competition.  Freshman Brianna Brown was impressive for Michigan as she made her NCAA debut in the all-around. 

Brandie Jay won the vault title with a 9.925 on a beautiful yurchenko 1.5.  Kiera Brown and Chelsea Davis tied for the bar title with a strong 9.875 for the Gym Dogs.  A pair of Wolverines took home the beam title with a 9.90 in Nicole Artz and Talia Chiarelli.  Nicole Artz also won the floor tile with a 9.90 and the all-around title with a 39.45. 

The Michigan Wolverines started the competition on bars where they had a fall in the lead off spot, although were able to post five solid scores.  After being at Michigan for only two weeks, Nichelle Christopherson saw action within the bar lineup.  She scored a 9.80 in her NCAA debut.  Freshman Brianna Brown anchored the bar lineup with a team high of 9.85.  Michigan took an early lead 49.025-49.0.  Michigan went to vault where they extended their lead 98.35-98.125.  Talia Chiarelli posted a new career high of 9.90 on vault.  The Wolverines continued to impress with a 49.15 on floor, led by Nicole Artz’s 9.90.  They again continued to extend their lead over the Gym Dogs.  Michigan looked to finish strong on beam to claim their first win of the season.  Michigan had five strong routines including a pair of 9.90’s from the sophomore duo, Nicole Artz and Talia Chiarelli.  Michigan posted a 49.10 on beam to clinch a great road win. 

The No. 7 Gym Dogs had to compete from behind tonight and came up short against the Wolverines.  Georgia started strong on vault with a 49.0 led by junior Bandie Jay.  Jay had a beautiful yurchenko 1.5 for a score of 9.925.  The Gym Dogs moved to their best event from last season, bars.  This year the team had to fill two spots from last season by adding freshman Natalie Vaculik and sophomore Rachel Schick.  Senior Chelsea Davis anchored in typical fashion posting a 9.875. She tied teammate Kiera Brown for the bar title.  The Gym Dogs were able to avoid counting a fall on bars.  At the half way point Georgia was looking to close the gap on the Wolverines as they moved to beam.  Georgia had a strong beam rotation going 6 for 6.  Freshman ViVi Babalis and Mary Beth Box posted a team high score of 9.85.  The team posted a 48.95 on beam.  The Gym Dogs headed to floor and were looking for a comeback win, down by .45 of a point.  Unfortunately the Gym Dogs had to count a fall on floor posting a 48.55.  Keira Brown posted a team high of 9.85 in the leadoff spot. 

 

Next week the Wolverines head to Columbus to take on Ohio State and West Virginia.  The Gym Dogs remain at home and welcome in Missouri.
