Stanford And San Jose State Ready To "Do It Big"

We are heading into the first big weekend of NCAA gymnastics and you can kick off the season with us right here on Gymnastike. This Friday, Jan. 9 we will be streaming the Stanford at San Jose State duel LIVE on Gymnastike Gold.

Stanford and San Jose State both opened their 2015 season this past weekend at the NorCal Classic. SJSU took third with a 194.05 and Stanford tied for fourth with a 193.45.

SJSU had a great meet and their team score was their second-highest opening-meet score in the past 10 years (second to their 194.300 in 2012). Head coach Wayne Wright was pleased with the team’s performance, particularly hitting 23 for 24 routines and not having to count a major mistake.

“Our goal basically is to keep getting better every week," Wright said. "This was an early meet and I’m pleased with how we performed and really believe we can build from there.” Wright said now it’s important for the team to continue the momentum and work on the details and "little things" including cleaning up and sticking landings.

SJSU Co-Captain Cami Guyer lead the team this past weekend and placed third all-around with a 38.925. Wright noted that Guyer is definitely one to watch along with junior Maddie Herr and freshman all-arounder Katilin Won.

At the NorCal classic, Stanford only competed five gymnasts on vault, bars, and floor, and therefore had to count every score for those events. Head Coach Kristen Smyth noted that they are looking to put up six gymnasts on each event on Friday. Freshman star Elizabeth Price will likely compete on bars, Samantha Shapiro will be ready to go on floor, and they are looking to add Nicolette McNair back on vault.

“The kids are pretty fired up to have another go on Friday night,” Smyth said. “They’ve been working hard and are definitely trying to get that depth going so that we have six up on every event.”

Smyth acknowledged the disappointing performance last weekend but the team has put it behind them and are ready to attack on Friday.

“The team as a whole has been training extremely well and extremely hard so it was kind of a surprise to see the falls that we did have. I expect they will be a lot better this coming weekend" Smyth said.

Stanford’s motto for the year is “Do It Big, Stanford.” The team is focusing on being fearless, putting all our work out there, and having no regrets. After a rough start this season, you can be sure Stanford will bring their A-game on Friday.
