Ferrari Edges Popa and Nichols for Tokyo World Cup Gold

Only five tenths separated the top four in the women's all around at the 2014 Tokyo World Cup and Italian veteran Vanessa Ferarri came out on top. Ferrari used a meet-high 14.40 on beam and an impressive 14.533 on floor to clinch the all around title. Ferrari continues to improve at age 23 and blew us away with a new double layout second pass on floor.

Watch Ferrari on beam:

American Maggie Nichols was a likely favorite for the gold, but hit her feet on the low bar during her Church to pak connection on uneven bars. Impressively, she was still able to hang on and pick back up with her routine unfazed, but only scored a 13.066. As result, Nichols slipped into 3rd place in the all around. She did, however, earn the meet's top score on vault, 15.10, for a strong double twisting yurchenko.

Romanian-born Roxana Popa of Spain won the all around silver and earned the meet's top score on uneven bars, 14.366.

Victoria Moors of Canada missed the podium by just two tenths, finishing in fourth place. Even still, Moors shined on floor with her laid out double double and gorgeous presentation. She earned the meet's top floor score of 14.633.

On the men's side, reigning World and Olympic Champion Kohei Uchimura continued his undefeated streak. He totaled an amazing 92.898 in his 2014 competitive debut, putting over two points on second place Fabian Hambuechen of Germany. Hambuechen finished with a 90.231 to edge out 2013 World All Around silver medalist Ryohei Kato of Japan who took a fall on high bar in the final rotation.

Uchimura earned 15's on every event and closed out his competition with a meet-high 15.90 on high bar, sticking his new triple twisting double layout dismount.

With the conclusion of this competition, the FIG World Cup All Around series overall champions were announced. American Elizabeth Price topped the women's standings after participation in three events. She won both the AT&T American Cup in Greensboro, N.C., and the Stuttgart (Germany) World Cup, as well as took second at the Glasgow (Scotland) World Cup.  Price clinched the Series title with 145 points.

For the men, Germany’s Fabian Hambuechen and Great Britain’s Daniel Purvis tied for the Series top spot.
