Sooner Men Dominate MPSF Championships

The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners completed their threepeat this past weekend in Norman, Oklahoma at the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Conference Championships. OU topped the charts on four of the six events and dominated the team competition finishing with a total score of 446.100.

The Sooners got off to a slow start with two falls on high bar, scoring only a 71.750 on the event. They picked up momentum quickly on the floor exercise, scoring a big 76.300, and never looked back. Solid performances on the last five events helped OU clinch their 21st conference title and 12th title in the last 15 years under head coach, Mark Williams.

"We were a little slow out of the box, high bar was a struggle with a couple of misses," says Williams, "but our floor team was outstanding and got us back into it."

"It's amazing how all of our guys stepped up," says senior, Raymond White, "I'm so unbelievably proud of them right now. Proud is the word of the night, that's all I can say."

Three Sooners were awarded individual conference titles, including Raymond White on the floor exercise (15.500), Michael Squires on the still rings (16.300), and Kanji Oyama on the vault (15.300). The University of California Berkley had the top performer on pommel horse in Donothan Bailey (14.900), and Stanford rounded out the field of individual titles with Akash Modi on parallel bars (14.800) and Paul Hichwa on high bar (15.450).

Oklahoma junior and defending national champion, Michael Squires, scored a career high 16.30 on the still rings, which is also the highest still rings score ever posted in OU history.

"Obviously, Dennis Zaremski of Stanford is really good on rings, and after I saw him score a 16.150, I knew I was going to have to step up," says Squires, "I figured if I was going to have a career high, why not make it tonight?"

Though the Sooners are excited about their conference success, they have their eyes on something even bigger. Next up will be the NCAA Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan April 10-12. The OU coaches and gymnasts are ready to bring their hardwork and dedication to the floor and battle with the best in the nation for the top spot and national title.

"We are looking forward to the NCAA's," says Williams, "I definitely feel like we're in the mix for being one of the contenders this year."

"Conference was a huge step in the right direction," says Squires of OU's performance, "and if we're able to pick it up and hit 30 for 30 [at NCAA's], I think we can take down anybody on our best day."
