Jesolo Selection Camp Begins Today


The top elite female gymnasts in the United States head to the Karolyi Ranch today for the first selection camp of the 2014 season. Athletes are competing for a place on the team that will represent the United States at the Jesolo Trophy competition, which will be held March 22-23, in Jesolo, Italy. The team will be announced when the camp ends Monday, March 17. Jesolo is a two day competition with team, all around, and event finals. 

The camp will also help determine Team USA's entries at the Pacific Rim Championships, April 9-13 in Richmond, B.C., Canada, and the Tokyo World Cup, April 5-6, which will be announced later in the month.

Peyton Ernst of Texas Dreams was originally selected to represent USA in Tokyo, however now she is in the running for Pac Rims. Team USA will be sending six athletes to Pac Rims including a minimum of three juniors.

According to USA Gymnastics, athletes vying to represent the United States at these competitions will be demonstrating full-routine readiness to Martha Karolyi and the rest of the selection committee.

Elizabeth Price of Parkettes National Training Center and Brenna Dowell of GAGE who finished 1-2 at the recent AT&T American Cup are expected to attend camp. However, Karolyi told us that she plans to rest them for Pac Rims and does not plan to send them to Jesolo. 

You can expect to see a few athletes named to the National Team at the conclusion of camp in order to field a large team for Jesolo. In particular, current non-national team members Rachel Gowey of Chow's, Ragan Smith of Texas Dreams, and Jordan Chiles of Naydenov are in the running for the team.
