Men's Qualifier This Weekend

As the 2013 P&G Championships are quickly approaching. Top gymnasts around the country are busy training and making the final adjustments to their competition routines. Saturday and Sunday, the men will have their last chance to advance to the 2013 P&G Championships this weekend with the Men's National Qualifier competition at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

2012 Olympians Danell Leyva and John Orozco will headline the field. Both are already qualified to for the P&G Championships, so they will be competing without pressure. The bulk of the field is made up of non-national team members hoping to earn their place at the National Championships.

The Qualifier will mark the first competition for reigning U.S. Champion Orozco since the Olympic Games and his devastating post-Olympic injury. Orozco tore his ACL and meniscus while performing in a Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions show and has spent months rehabbing. Orozco told the Gymnastics Examiner in February that he plans to compete at this summer's National Championships, but will sit out floor and vault.

Here is the outline of ways that men may qualify to compete at the 2013 P&G Championships:
Senior National Team members who are named following the February 2013 Winter Cup
Challenge (including all eight 2012 Olympic team members and alternates) automatically qualify.

• A minimum of 14 athletes will qualify to the 2013 U.S. Championships based on the National Points Ranking System from the 2013 National Qualifier to be held July 13-14 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

• From the 2013 NCAA Championships:
a. The top 2 rank order all-around (U.S. citizens), not including any prequalified athletes to the 2013 U.S. Championships, provided they finish top 8 in the all-around.
b. Top two ranked athletes (U.S. citizens) on floor exercise, pommel horse,
still rings, parallel bars and horizontal bar, which may include pre-qualified athletes to the 2013 U.S. Championships.

• An athlete who is unable to participate in the 2013 National Qualifier may petition to compete in the 2013 U.S. Championships
