Chellsie Memmel Update
Chellsie Memmel, the 2005 World All-Around Champion and 2008 Olympic silver medalist, will retire from the sport after the Kellogg's tour. Chellsie has been a staple on the US elite scene for quite some time. She became a two-time world champion in 2003, at age 15. A last minute replacement to the 2003 World Championship team, the rookie shocked the world with her strong performance in Anaheim. Memmel helped Team USA win gold and tied with team mate Hollie Vise, for an individual title on the uneven bars.
Unfortunately, Memmel struggled with injuries throughout her career. She was the alternate for the 2004 Olympic team when an injured foot kept her off the team. A year later, she became the third american female to win a world all-around title. She did make the Olympic team in 2008, but broke her ankle shortly before the games and could only compete on the uneven bars. A nagging shoulder injury hampered her training efforts for the 2012 team and her elite career ended at the 2012 American Classic. Memmel’s accomplishments in the sport are extradorinary and will be remembered long after she hangs up her leotard.
