Brenna Dowell to compete at Mexican Open

USA Gymnastics announced today following the latest elite training camp at the Karolyi Ranch that Senior National Team member Brenna Dowell of
Odessa, Mo. and GAGE Gymnastics will compete at the 2012 Mexican Open.

The competition will take place
Oct. 12-13 in Acapulco, Mexico. Athletes from 11 countries will compete at the two-day contest that will feature all-around and individual event competition.

Dowell will be one of the clear favorites in the all around and will face competition from
Anna Dementyeva of Russia, Ana Lago and Yessenia Estrada of Mexico, Georgia Rose Brown of Australia, Ciara Gandolfi of Italy, and Jessica Gil Ortiz of Colombia.

Dowell last competed in Mexico at the 2010 Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, where she helped Team USA to team gold. In 2012, Dowell moved up from the junior national team and placed ninth all-around at the Visa Championships and U.S. Olympic Trials, and earned silver on uneven bars at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy.

Dowell is a balanced all around gymnast who stood out this summer with her big tumbling on floor including a rarely seen front handspring to front double pike opening tumbling pass [video here].

Dowell has verbally committed to compete for the University of Oklahoma.
