U.S. men win bronze medal at 2011 Pan Am Games
GUADALAJARA, Mexico, Oct. 25, 2011 – The U.S. Men’s Team won the team bronze medal at the 2011 Pan American Games, held at the Nissan Gymnastics Stadium in the Lopez Mateos Sports Complex.  Gymnastics competition continues tomorrow with the men’s and women’s all-around finals.

“The bronze (medal) is an accomplishment and we’re happy,” said team captain Brandon Wynn of Columbus, Ohio/Team Hilton HHonors (Ohio State University). “I think it shows what the USA is about – we always fight – and we are going to fight until the finish.”

The USA, which competed in the first subdivision, earned a total score of 342.000. Both Brazil and Puerto Rico competed in the second subdivision.  Brazil earned a total 346.100 to take first place, and Puerto Rico’s 344.850 put them ahead of the United States. The team finals also determinewhich gymnasts will advance to the all-around and individual event finals.

The U.S. men’s team includes: Donothan Bailey of Lake Forest, Calif./University of California – Berkeley; C.J. Maestas of Corrales, N.M./University of Illinois; Sho Nakamori of Albany, Calif./Champions Academy; Tyler Mizoguchi of Houston, Texas/University of Illinois; Paul Ruggeri of Manlius, N.Y; and Wynn.

“At the end of the day, we are all happy with what we did and what we came here to do,” Maestas said. “We are honored to be in Mexico and to be competing with some great teams – it’s just another stepping stone.”

The U.S. men have claimed the team bronze medal in three consecutive Pan Am Games, 2003, 2007 and 2011.

The finals schedule is:  Oct. 26, women’s (1 p.m.) and men’s (5:30 p.m.) all-around; and Oct. 27-28, individual events, both at 1 p.m.  All times are local.
