Gymnastics Canada has announced its women’s team for the 2011 world artistic gymnastics championships in October.
Members of the team are:

Pegg and Chiarelli of the Bluewater Gymnastics Club in Sarnia, Ont., are coached by Dave and Liz Brubaker. However, Chiarelli lives in Boston and trains at Brestyan's in Massachusetts under Mihai Brestyan, but represents Bluewater in Canadian competition. She is a two time USA Championships qualifier in the junior level (2009 and 2010). She was born and raised on Ottawa until her family moved to Boston and began competing in Canidian elite competitions this year. Vaculik of Gemini Gymnastics in Oshawa is coached by Elena Davydova and Valery Yahchybekov, Lee and Gerber of the Oakville Gymnastics Club are coached by Kelly and Susan Manjak and Lorne Bobkin, Gardiner, of Dynamo Gymnastics in Cambridge, Ont., is coached by Elvira Saadi, Vladimir Kondratenko and Leblond-Chartrand of the Gymnix Club in Montreal is coached by Katerine Dussault, Francine Bouffard and Pierre Prive.

Team selection criteria included recent results from both national and international competitions and performance at trial meets held this past Thursday and Saturday at the Oakville Gymnastics club.

Vaculik, the 2010 Canadian all around champion now on a scholarship at Stanford University, is the most experienced member of the team and will draw on two previous world championship appearances at this year’s event to be held in Tokyo October 7-16.

Leblond-Chartrand was also member of the 2010 team that placed 13th last year in Rotterdam. The other members of the team will be competing at their first world championships in a bid to qualify a full team for Canada at the 2012 Olympics next summer in London. 

 

Missing from the team is powerhouse Jessica Savona who injured herself while competing at the recent Japan Cup. Junior Canadian champion Victoria Moors and 2010 junior national champion Sabrina Gill will miss this year's Worlds but turn age-eligible for senior competition next year, just in time for the Olympics.

The top eight teams in Tokyo will clinch an Olympic berth and the final four of the 12-country quota for full teams will be determined early next year at a final qualification meet in London. Canada just missed qualifying as a team for the 2008 Olympics so they have a lot on the line here.
