Stanford Wins 2011 Men's NCAA National Title

Stanford University won the 2011 Men's NCAA Gymnastics National title last night in Columbus. Stanford also posted the top score on the qualifying day and managed to repeat when it really counted, scoring 363.45 to win the title.

This is their second NCAA team title in three years. They had trouble on pommel horse but secured the win with a strong finish on the vault. Alex Buscaglia and Tim Gentry both stuck their vaults to score 16.35 and 16.25. Stanford finished with a 64.55 on vault, the best of the day and enough to win the NCAA title comfortably.

The Stanford team was led by their strong senior class of Tim Gentry, Alex Buscaglia, Josh Dixon, Ryan Lieberman, and Nicholas Noone.

Oklahoma came in with the top national ranking and ended up second place with a 361.60 and Illinois finished 3rd with 360.15. Cal-Berkeley (358.7), defending champion Michigan (356.2) and Penn State (355.7) finished fourth through sixth.

In the all around competition, Steven Legendre has been ranked #1 in the nation most of the season and won the prestigious Nissen-Emery Award. Both Legendre and his teammate Jake Dalton were looking like the favorites to win but both struggled on pommel horse and Legendre put his hand down on his Dragulescu vault.

Michigan freshman Sam Mikulak emerged as the 2011 All Around Champion with an impressive 90.75. Injuries early in the season kept Mikulak out of the all around until the very end and he took the all around title at the recent Big 10 Championships. Tyler Mizoguchi of Illinois finished 2nd with 90.15 and Alex Naddour of Oklahoma took the bronze, 89.75. Legendre finished 4th with 89.70 and Brandon Wynn of Ohio State and Bryan Del Castillo of Cal tied for 5th.
