Anna Dementieva, Philipp Boy win European Championships, Aliya Mustafina Injured

UPDATE as of Saturday, April 9th - They have confirmed that Aliya has torn her ACL, a more severe injury that the previously reported meniscus tear. She is scheduled for surgery in Munich on April 12th. This means she will almost definitely miss the 2011 World Championships. We wish her all the best for a speedy recovery.

World champion Aliya Mustafina of Russia was by far the favorite to win today's all around final at the European Championships in Berlin, but she went down in the first rotation of night after landing her yurchenko 2.5 twist vault, one of the toughest vaults in the competition. She landed the vault and still scored quite well (15.375) but collapsed to the mat in pain and left the arena in a wheelchair.  It turns out she has torn her meniscus and will require surgery.

However, the show must go on. In the absence of Mustafina, it gave her Russian teammate a chance to shine. Anna Dementyeva captured the European all around title with a 57.475. She ended on vault and though she only competes a low difficulty yurchenko full twist it was enough to maintain the lead. Her highest score of the day came on beam where she earned a 15.150. Elisabeth Seitz of Germany earned the silver medal with 56.70. Seitz has drastically improved over the past few years and is really leading the way for the German team. The bronze medal went the Amelia Racea of Romania with 56.60.

Here's is Demenyeva's beam routine from today, uploaded by gymnastike user eurogym:
