Zamarripa Tears Achilles, and More News from NCAA, Elite, and Club Gymnastics


There's quite a bit of news in the gymnastics world to report this week, so here's a quick rundown:

UCLA's top All Arounder & US National team member Vanessa Zamarripa is out for the NCAA season. She tore her achilles tumbling in practice on Tuesday. This is a big hit for UCLA who is ranked #1 in the preseason polls.

A few US Junior National team members have been competing internationally:

Katelyn Ohashi and McKenzie Wofford (both of WOGA) traveled to South Africa for the Bumbo Cup and won 5 gold medals.
Ohashi won All Around with 56.425, with Wofford finishing second at 54.925. Ohashi also won vault (14.375) and floor (14.500), and Wofford won bars (14.250) and balance beam (14.525).

Ariana Guerra and Ericha Fassbender (both of Stars) traveled to Belgium over Thanksgiving for the 14th annual Top Gym competition. They faced tough competition from Russia's Anastasia Sidorova who easily won all around with 56.917. Guerra won the all around silver with 53.883, Elisa Mereghini of Italy took bronze, and Fassbender finished 4th. Guerra won the vault title, Fassbender won uneven bars, and Sidorva won beam & floor.

Defending World Champ Kohei Uchimura of Japan continues to raise the bar. At the recent Japanese National Championships, he debuted 2 7.0 start value vaults: a triple twisting yurchenko AND a dragulescu vault (handspring double front half out). Check out the video of the yurchenko triple.


Gymnastike contributor David Pendrys provided coverage of the University of New Hampshire Meet the Team Intrasquad. 2000 US Olympian Kristin Maloney is now assistant coaching & choreographing at UNH. Check out the videos. 


The 2010 NCAA all-around champion Susan Jackson was named SEC Female Athlete of the Year! She also won the Honda Award last season. She's coaching at the Louisiana Gymnastics Training Center at LSU and will graduate later this month.

Some NCAA commits this week:
2010 JO National All Around & Vault Champion Brandie Jay of GK's Gymnastics has committed to Georgia. After her great level 10 season she turned elite and competed at both US Classic and US Championships.

Nicole Turner, L10 from Metroplex Gymnastics has committed to Oregon State. She was the Texas State All Around and floor Champion in 2010.

Madeline Hanley, an elite at Parkettes has committed to Minnesota. She won bars and floor at the 2010 PKI.

Erin Lewallen, L10 from Houston Gymnastics Center has committed to Iowa State. She finished 3rd AA at the 2010 WOGA Classic.

The Toyota Cup in Japan, a prestigious two-day individual event competition. The US Men's team is: 2008 Olympian Joey Hagerty, RJ Heflin, and 2010 World team alternate Paul Ruggeri who is currently a senior on the University of Illinois team.
