Horton Heads to Champion's Trophy, and More International Assignments for US Men

Fresh off his World All Around bronze medal, Jonathan Horton is packing his bags and heading back to Europe to compete in this weekend's 2010 Champion's Trophy in Stuttgart, Germany. He'll be one of the favorites and will get a rematch with World silver medallist Philipp Boy of Germany. Reigning World Champion Kohei Uchimura is not competing.  Horton and the guys will have a chance to rack up some cash as this meet is known for big cash prizes.

USA Gymnastics also announced today the members of the U.S. Men's National Team who will represent the USA on international assignments for the rest of 2010.

The three athletes participating in the Toyota Cup on Dec. 11-12 in Toyota, Aichi (Japan) are:
2008 Olympian Joey Hagerty back from shoulder surgery, first-time Senior National Team member RJ Heflin, and 2010 World team alternate Paul Ruggeri who is currently a senior on the University of Illinois team. The Toyota Cup is a two-day individual event competition. The coaches are 2008 Olympian and current University of Illinois head coach Justin Spring and Nori Iwai.

After numerous injuries resulted in a 3 year absence from US Nationals, 25-year-old Heflin came back incredibly strong at this year's Visa Championships. Check out his stuck vault he uploaded from Hartford:

The seniors will be accompanied by six junior national team members who will attend a training camp in Tokyo, Japan, Dec. 5-12:
Wyatt Aycock of Orlando Metro, Kevin Ko of Golden Bears Gymnastics; Jake Martin of Orlando Metro, Cale Robinson of Premier Athletic & currently a freshman on the Stanford team, Jacoby Rubin of Buffalo Grove Gymnastics; and Jordan Valdez of Champion Gymnastics and currently a freshman on the University of Illinois team. Phil Savage and Leo Krivitsky are the coaches.
You may remember Cale Robinson from the first annual Gymnastike Bloopers Contest. Cale was voted into the finals with this video:

We hope you don't do that again in Japan, Cale :)

This will be a great opportunity for these young guys to learn from some of the best in the World and get to watch the seniors compete in the Toyota Cup. Japan will play host to the World Championships in 2011.

Also happening in international gymnastics this weekend:
The Freddy Cup Grand Prix in Italy, the Trampoline World Championships, and the 16th Asian Games will kick off in China.
We'll post videos from all the competitions as they come available.
