Recruiting 101: Staying Positive When Your Friends Are Getting Recruited

When it seems like everyone else is getting recruited but you haven't found your "spot" yet, here are some tips for staying positive:

1. Make a commitment to celebrate.

Be happy for others, but also pat yourself on the back for your own accomplishments. If you are a new level 10, it may be that you achieved adding a new skill to an event or you may be proud of yourself for staying calm at your first Showcase. Your reality is going to be different from any other gymnast you see, and that's okay.

2. Never compare your beginning to someone else's middle.

Remember you may just be moving into level 10 whereas others may be in their third year. There is a big difference in consistency and development when you have multiple years of competing level 10 under your belt. It takes time to achieve 10.0 start values on four events. Some gymnasts attain skills much quicker than others. Your strengths may be academics and you might have to work much harder in the gym. Don't make comparisons!

3. Contentment teaches us that who we are is already enough.

When you come home from a Showcase or High Tech camp having seen gymnasts with more skills, you must remember you are enough. The sport of gymnastics is what you do -- not who you are. You are not just a gymnast, but a sister, friend, and daughter, and this will be true throughout your entire life. Being content is the key.
