Vanessa Ferrari Injured, Tears Achilles In Floor Final At Gymnastics Worlds
The 26-year-old was the last competitor to perform and on her second pass -- a whip to full twisting double back -- she was incredibly short on rotation and her landing. She immediately grabbed her foot as medical staff rushed onto the podium to assist her. She was carried off and wheeled out of the competition arena.
According to the Italian Federation, Ferrari sustained a tear to her left Achilles tendon and will undergo surgery when she returns home.
Ferrari went through double Achilles tendon surgery last year after the Rio Olympics and just recently made it back to competition shape in time to qualify for Italy's world championships team.
Ferrari's fall was the last of many in an injury-riddled worlds in Montreal. There were an unprecedented number of meet-ending injuries throughout the competition, leaving many wondering what exactly went so wrong. We may never know if it was the new equipment, the strikingly bright lights, or simply a bunch of flukes.
