Samir Ait Said Looks Toward World Championships One Year After Rio Disaster
Samir Ait Said's vault during men's qualifications at the 2016 Rio Games will go down as one of the most traumatic moments in the history of Olympic gymnastics. A Tsuk double pike. A bad landing. A leg in places it should never be.

Said was carted off the competition floor and quickly underwent surgery to repair the compound fracture in his leg. Following the Olympics, Said reflected on what he called an "extraordinary experience," saying,

Immediately, I thought about the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Not to keep hope, but because I am determined. I want this Olympic medal and I will get it.
Within weeks, Said was already making big progress on his recovery, wasting no time feeling sorry for himself.

It's been month after month of rehab and recovery, but just one year after Rio redemption is on the horizon, as Said is preparing for the 2017 World Championships in Montreal.
