The University of Michigan women's gymnastics program has named former U-M men's gymnast Scott Vetere as assistant coach.

"We are extremely excited that Scott will be joining our program," said head coach Bev Plocki. "We feel that his experience as both a national team athlete and coach will bring an added dimension to our staff. As an alum of the University of Michigan, he possesses a deep love and passion for the Maize and Blue."

There is a lot of excitement about what Scott brings to the table, and we can't wait for him to get started.
Vetere is very familiar with U-M, having graduated in 2003 from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts with an individual concentration degree. He also served as an assistant coach for the men's gymnastics team for five seasons (2005-09).

"I am excited to come back to the best university in the world to represent the Maize and Blue!" said Vetere.

I want to thank the administration, coaching staff and student-athletes for the opportunity to share my gymnastics knowledge and passion for Michigan Athletics.
In his five seasons with the U-M men's program, Vetere coached six NCAA champions, 55 All-Americans, 16 Big Ten champions, four U.S. National Team members, two Irish National Team members, two World Championship competitors, and one Olympian. During his time with the men's team he was responsible for recruiting operations, most notably bringing two-time Olympian and three-time NCAA all-around champion Sam Mikulak to Michigan.

A 10-time NCAA All-American, Vetere was a member of the 1999 national championship team, and the Wolverines won two straight Big Ten titles in 1999 and 2000. He was the 2000 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, a six-time Big Ten champion and three-year captain. In 2000 he was co-recipient of the U-M Male Athlete of the Year award.

Also a six-time member of the U.S. National Team, Vetere competed at the World Championship Team Trials in 1999 and was an alternate for the 2000 Olympic Trials.

Plocki is familiar with Vetere's coaching ability as he has served on the master staff at the U-M women's gymnastics summer camps the last six years. Vetere also served as a member of the U.S. National Team staff from 2007-09.
