MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnastics coach Jason Butts announced today the hiring of Shea Anderson as assistant coach.

Most recently a three-year volunteer assistant at Eastern Michigan, Anderson will assist on the coaching of all four events and oversee the team’s community service outreach program.

“I am happy to welcome Shea to the Mountaineer Gymnastics Family,” Butts said. “She brings years of competing and coaching along with administrative experience to Morgantown. Shea has a fantastic personality, and I know she will mesh well with our student-athletes, staff and program goals."
I think her passion for the sport and drive to succeed will help the WVU gymnastics program continue its upward climb this season.
“I’m thrilled and honored to be a part of the WVU gymnastics program,” Anderson said. “I’d like to thank Director of Athletics Shane Lyons and the administration for this opportunity. The WVU gymnastics staff was incredibly welcoming throughout the interview process and made me feel at home immediately."
I’m excited to continue the success of Mountaineer Gymnastics in the Big 12 Conference and nationally. I’m eager to move to Morgantown and start this great journey.
At EMU since September 2014, Anderson coached vault and floor while assisting the Eagle staff with all aspects of practice, as well as office work. She also served as the in-practice strength and conditioning coordinator, providing four-week workouts and teaching spin workouts. Additionally, Anderson coordinated team travel and meals, assisted the recruiting coordinator in evaluations and promoted the program through various social media outlets.

Anderson also was a part-time coach with Infinity Gymnastics Academy throughout her three years with the Eagles, coaching the USAG optional program. Additionally, since January 2015, Anderson also served as a part-time professor at EMU, teaching general gymnastics information, skills and rules to undergraduate students.

Prior to her time at EMU, Anderson was a strength and conditioning graduate assistant at Creighton (August 2012 – June 2014), where she worked with the women’s rowing and cross country teams, implementing workouts while coaching student-athletes on correct technique to ensure safety and development. She also assisted in coaching the volleyball, softball, women’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball teams inside the weight room, as well as assisted with intern training.

A four-year letterwinner at Iowa State, Anderson competed on vault, floor and balance beam and owned career highs of 9.85 on vault and floor. A three-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, Anderson also was a two-time ISU Scholar-Athlete, an Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree in 2012 and an Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honoree in 2010. Additionally, she was named the team’s Most Improved Gymnast in 2011.

Anderson competed at Omega Gymnastics, and at one point, held each of the club’s level 10 records. She was a four-time regional qualifier and a National Junior Olympics qualifier in 2007. Additionally, she was a member of the National Honor Society at Riverside High.

Anderson is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS).

A native of Oakland, Iowa, Anderson earned her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health option from Iowa State in May 2012. She earned her master’s degree in exercise science – strength and conditioning from Nebraska in May 2014.
