INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 27, 2016 – Following a strategic planning session for the 2020 Olympic cycle held recently at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., USA Gymnastics is revamping the leadership position for the men’s national team from a national team coordinator to a high performance director.  The newly created position of high performance director is a full-time position based in Colorado Springs that will focus on sustained international success. The meeting included coaches of the senior national team, members of the Men’s Program Committee and USA Gymnastics men’s program staff.

The job description for the high performance director is posted on usagym.org, and USA Gymnastics is accepting applications.  The position will report to Dennis McIntyre, the vice president of men’s gymnastics who will remain based in Colorado Springs.

“The coaches, committee members and staff did a thorough review of the existing structure and results, and then took a hard look at what is needed to prepare our athletes for success heading toward Tokyo and beyond,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics.  “Having a full-time director based in Colorado Springs is the logical next step and will better enable us to take advantage of the facilities and opportunities available at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.”

The contract of the current national team coordinator, Kevin Mazeika of Houston, expires at the end of this year.

“USA Gymnastics appreciates Kevin’s hard work, dedication and contributions within the men’s program as the national team coordinator,” said McIntyre. “Kevin has played an important role in the men’s program for the last 12 years.”

Before becoming national team coordinator in December 2009, Mazeika served as the head coach for the men’s team at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, as well as the 2007, 2003 and 2001 World Championships Teams.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the U.S. men’s national team coordinator for the past seven years,” said Mazeika. “I’m grateful to have worked with such an amazing group of dedicated and talented athletes and coaches, and I will miss that the most. I want to thank USA Gymnastics for the opportunity to serve the U.S. Men’s Team in this capacity.”
