New Quad, New Rules: The 2017-2020 Code - Balance Beam & Floor
Today, we’re wrapping up our series on the 2017-2020 Code of Points with the new values for skills on beam and floor.

Be sure to look at our previous summaries of the changes on vault and bars as well as the new rules governing the D- and E-scores.

Check out our summary of the changes on beam and floor below.

Beam

Mounts

There were quite a few changes to the values of mounts on beam. All the changes involve raising the skill value by a tenth. Check out the list of mounts below:

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Straight jump with ½ turn in flight phase to stand - take-off from both feet B C
Jump with full turn in flight phase to stand, take-off from both legs, approach at end or diagonal to beam C D
Leap forward with leg change (free leg swing to 45°) to cross split C D
3 flying flairs C D
Jump to roll forward at end or middle of beam, also from clear straddle support on end of beam - swing backward to roll forward A B
From cross stand facing end of beam - head kip B C
From cross stand facing end of beam - jump to handstand with hip angle (pike) to front walkover B C
Round-off at end of beam, flic-flac with ½ turn and walkover forward E F
Planche with support on one or both bent arms (2 sec), also legs in cross split position n/a A
From rear stand (back towards beam), flic-flac over beam to candle position, ending in front support with or without backward hip circle C D
Round-off in front of beam - jump with ½ twist to near side handstand - lower to optional position C D
Aerial walkover forward to rear support - or with ¼ turn to cross sit on thigh - 90° approach to beam B C
Aerial walkover forward to cross stand - approach at end of beam, take off from both feet E F
Salto forward tucked with ½ twist E F
Round-off at end of beam, flic-flac through handstan, support on one or both arms, to cross stand on beam C D
Round-off at end of beam, salto backward tucked or piked with step-out to cross or side stand on beam D E
Jump forward with ½ twist, salto backward piked E F

Leaps, Jumps & Hops

As with the mounts, most of the changes in this category on beam involve raising the value of skills by a tenth. There are a few exceptions; most notably, the sheep jump, which has been devalued from a D to a C skill. See all the changes below:

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Split leap forward A B
Split leap with full turn D E
Split jump from cross position A B
Split jump with ½ turn from cross position B C
Split jump with full turn from cross position C D
Straddle pike jump (both legs above horizontal) or side split jump from cross position A B
Straddle pike jump with ½ turn from cross position B C
Straddle pike with full turn from cross position C D
Tour jete C D
Johnson with additional ½ turn D E
Pike jump from cross position with full turn C D
Sheep jump D C
Hop with ½ turn, free leg extended above horizontal throughout n/a B
Stretched jump/hop with full turn from cross position B C
Stretched jump/hop with 1 ½ turn from cross position C D
Cat leap n/a A
Cat leap with ½ turn A B
Cat leap with full turn B C
Tuck hop or jump with ½ turn from cross position, hip & knee angle at 45° A B
Tuck hop or jump with full turn from cross position B C
Wolf hop or jump with full turn from cross position C D
Wolf hop or jump with 1 ½ turn from cross position n/a E

Turns

Only two turns have been changed in value in the new Code. The most notable is the 2 ½ wolf turn, famously performed by Simone Biles. In the current code, both the 2 ½ and the triple wolf turns were valued as E skills. In the new code, the 2 ½ has been devalued to a D skill.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
2 ½ turn in tuck stand on one leg, free leg optional (wolf turn) E D
1 ½ turn on back in kip position (hip-leg angle closed) C D

Holds & Acrobatic Non-Flight

All of the non-flight acrobatic elements on beam that incurred changes have involved raising the value of the skill. Changes have been made to a variety of roll skills as well as front and back walkover skills, which were all fairly low in value.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Roll forward without hand support to sit position or to tuck stand A B
Free shoulder roll forward with hip extension and without hand support to sit position or tuck stand B C
Roll sideways, body stretched B C
Side split, roll sideways stretched, legs separated, end position optional B C
Walkover forward, with support of one arm A B
Kick to cross handstand with ½ turn to walkover forward B C
Walkover backward, with support of one arm A B
Walkover backward with ½ turn to walkover forward B C

Acrobatic Flight

Many of the new acrobatic elements are skills that already had values assigned, but were not yet in the Table of Elements because they were named for the first gymnast to perform the skill in major competition. An example is the Schaefer, a sideways salto tucked from take-off on one leg to side stand. Pauline Schaefer had this move named for her at the 2014 World Championships. Check out the full list of acrobatic changes below:

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Jump backward (flic-flac take-off), with ½ twist to handspring forward, land on 2 feet (Worley) n/a E
Flic-flac with minimum _ twist before hand support E D
Gainer flic-flac with _ twist to handstand (2 sec), lower to optional end position (Honti) n/a C
Gainer flic-flac with minimum 3/4 twist before hand support E D
Aerial cartwheel in cross position (Colussi Pelaez) n/a E
Salto sideway tucked with ½ turn, take off from one leg to side stand (Schaefer) n/a E
Jump forward with ½ twist, salto backward tucked or piked E F

Dismounts

A few dismounts had their values altered. For example, the piked gainer at the end of the beam has been devalued from a C to B skill, while a stretched gainer with legs together at the end of the beam has been lowered from D to C.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Aerial cartwheel into salto backward tucked (Kim) n/a E
Stretched jump forward with full twist and salto forward stretched C D
Gainer salto piked at end of beam C B
Gainer salto stretched with legs together at end of beam D C

Floor

Leaps, Jumps & Hops

About half of the skills in the 2017-2020 Table of Elements are "new" because they do not appear in the current Code. Krystyna Sankova of Ukraine also added a skill she completed at the 2013 World Championships: a switch leg ring with a ½ turn.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Tuck jump with separation of legs to cross split during flight phase n/a A
Butterfly forward & backward C B
Switch leap to ring position with ½ turn (Sankova) n/a D
Pike jump with full turn B C
Stag jump with ½ turn n/a A
Ring jump A B
Stag ring jump A B
Split ring jump n/a B
Stretched hop or jump with full turn A B
Stretched hop or jump with double turn B C
Hop with ½ turn, free leg extended above horizontal throughout n/a B

Hand Support Elements

Two fairly easy hand-support elements have been raised from an A- to a B-value in the new Code.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Jump kick or press to handstand with 1 ½ - 2/1 turn in handstand, return movement optional A B
Roll backward to handstand with 1 ½ turn in handstand A B

Acrobatic Elements

Very few acrobatic elements have changed in the new Code. The majority of new elements in the Table appear to be from gymnasts having skills named after them in this past quad, such as the Biles and the Dowell, or else the skill just didn’t appear in the Table previously. The only change in value is in a whip salto backward with a full twist, which has been raised from a B- to C-skill.

Skill 2013-2016 Code Value 2017-2020 Code Value
Double salto forward piked (Dowell) n/a F
Arabian double salto stretched (Dos Santos II) G H
Double salo backward stretched with ½ twist (Biles) n/a G
Double salto backward stretched with double twist (Moors) n/a I
Whip salto backward with full twist B C
