Jade Carey performed a tucked Kasumatsu full at 2016 Junior Olympic Nationals and tied for first on the event with a 9.70. It was the first time this skill has been done at the women's J.O. National level, so it will now be called "The Carey."

It's very similar to a Tsuk 2/1, but she turns away from the table into a front salto instead of toward the table into a back salto.

Carey took third all-around in the Junior F division with an impressive 38.475. She is from Region 1 and committed to Oregon State University for the 2018-2019 season.

We caught up with Jade to hear about this exciting accomplishment:

FloGymnastics: When did you start training this vault?
Jade Carey: I started training it a couple years ago into the open foam and first brought it on floor-level mats last year.

What was the biggest challenge in learning the vault?
The biggest challenge was learning the last half in the tucked position.

Have you been performing the Kas 1/1 throughout the year?
The beginning of season, I competed the Kas 1/2 and the Yurchenko layout full, and at the Cactus Cup at the end of February, I first competed the Kas 1/1.

Did you know that no one had ever competed that at Nationals before? When did you realize you would be the first?
My coaches informed me that we needed to file paperwork to get the vault evaluated since it had not been done yet. I was really excited to compete it at Nationals.

What were you first thoughts when you landed the vault?
I was happy when I landed, but knew that I still had to do another one, so I wanted to stay focused on making both of my vaults and I was thrilled to have completed Nationals hitting all four events. My coach was informed from a member on the committee after the meet who said my vault would be written in the next Publication of the J.O. Code of Points.

What is the most exciting part about having a skill named after you?
I am honored to have my name written among so many other amazing athletes and excited to be a part of gymnastics history. This season was a really fun experience and I am excited to see what the future holds.
