The Penn State Nittany Lions women’s gymnastics team performed impressively at the 2nd annual Blue White Showcase last Friday, December 14th in Rec Hall.

PSU’s top all-around gymnast, senior Sharaya Musser, who has qualified to the National Championships each year since 2010, looked in shape and ready for the regular season.

On vault, she performed her new Yurchenko one-and-a-half. The vault was clean and tight in the air, and the landing was under control with only one minor step.

If Musser plans to throw that vault at Nationals and seriously compete for the all-around title, she has to eliminate that step and work on getting a bigger block/rise. As it is now, her one-and-a-half pales in comparison to that same vault from Diandra Milliner (Alabama) and Kytra Hunter (Florida).

Later in the showcase, despite some glitches in warm-ups, Musser executed a near flawless floor routine, with crisp choreography and beautiful leaps.

Musser warmed up on beam and bars, but did not perform on those events.

The Blue White Showcase featured a number of new arrivals who got a chance to perform in Rec Hall for the first time.

Freshmen Alix Fadin, Samantha Musto, Taylor Alotta, and junior transfer (from LSU) Sidney Sanabria-Robles, were among the newcomers who had solid routines throughout the night. In total, the 2013 PSU women’s gymnastics team has eight newcomers – seven freshmen and one transfer.

Other highlights for the Lions were the performances of sophomores Lexi Carroll, Alex Witt and juniors Lindsay Musgrove and Kassidy Stauder. Lexi Carroll was particularly impressive and confident on floor. Musgrove’s beam routine was graceful and showed excellent flexibility. Kassidy Stauder shined on bars with good handstands and a strong dismount.

2013 should be a good year for PSU women’s gymnastics as they appear to have good depth, strong routines on each event, and a good blend of young talent and upperclassmen.

The Nittany Lion’s regular season gets underway Saturday, January 5th at Denver.
