The 2013 Gymnastike "EGPY" Awards

The 2013 ESPYs took place last week, and while members of the Fierce Five received nominations in multiple categories, unlike their shining moment in London, the ladies left without a win. But the gallant event got our brains turning inspiring us to ensure that the gymnastics community gained the recognition they deserved. Welcome to the 2013 Gymnastike EGPY (Excellence in Gymnastics Performance Yearly) Awards! An awards show that focuses on the great club, collegiate, and elite performances from gymnasts in the June 2012 - June 2013 seasons. The nominees are in, but now you decide who will take home the--well, imaginary--trophies!

Best Male Gymnast

The nominees are: Sam Mikulak, Jake Dalton, Danell Leyva, Kohei Uchimura, and Marcel Nguyen. Mikulak receives the nomination for his role on the US Men's 2012 Olympic Team and his win at the 2013 NCAA Men's All Around Final. Jake Dalton also contends for the award for his excellent performances for the men's Olympic Team, and impressive all around victories in 2013. Danell Leyva too competed for the American Olympic team and was the only member to win a medal, taking home a Bronze in the men's All Around Final. Kohei Uchimura of Japan receives his nomination for winning the 2012 Olympic Men's All Around Final. And lastly, Marcel Nguyen tops the charts as the German competitor took home two Silver medals in London from the All Around and Parallel Bars Event Finals.

This year marked a tight race for the Best Female Gymnast. Despite missing out of the goal of competing in the All Around Final, Jordyn Wieber returned to the London Arena for the Team Final with a vengence aiding in USA's Gold Medal win. Lastly, after a disappointing injury-ridden pre-season, UCLA surprised many when they qualified to the 2013 NCAA Super Six in front of a home crowd where they finished fourth.
