Legends Born in All-Around Final

The Women's All Around Final at the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium are just toinight and worldwide fans are counting down the hours until the start of the meet.

The Americans dominated in the qualifications with Ross and Biles going 1-2. Simone Biles made every single event final and is the  first American to do so since Shannon Miller in 1993. If either girl wins, she will join the ranks of Chellsie Memmel, Shannon Miller and Bridget Sloan, three American women to win the all-around title in an Individual World Championship.

Let's take a look back at some of the legendary American gymnasts that won the world all-around title at an individual World Championships.

Shannon Miller- Birmingham 1993

Most gymnasts win a national title, a world title and then go on to win an Olympic medal. Shannon Miller took the road less traveled. In 1993, sixteen-year-old Shannon was coming off of a silver medal in the all-around at the 1992 Olympic Games. This was the first of her two world championships titles. She was already coming off of her first National Championship title when she and Dominique Dawes qualified to the all-around final in Birmingham, Great Britain.

Dominique started off strong with powerful performances on beam and floor exercise, while Shannon did what she always did best, stayed clean and consistent and as per usual, fabulous. After three rotations, Dominique held the top spot while Shannon was in third behind Ukraine’s Tatiana Lysenko. But after a kerfuffle on the vault by Dominique, Shannon won the all-around by .07 over Romania’s Gina Gogean. Shannon was only the second American to win the world championship all-around title.

Chellsie Memmel - Melbourne 2005

Throughout Chellsie’s career, she’s been the perpetual comeback kid, getting injured and then coming back up out of the ashes like a Phoenix. In 2003, Chellsie was flown into Anaheim California at the last minute to help team USA win it’s first team world championship gold. That year, Chellsie tied with Hollie Vise for the uneven bars title.

In 2005, it was Chellsie’s time to shine in her own spotlight. In Australia, Chellsie and teammate, Nastia Liukin both qualified to the all-around final. Going into Worlds, Nastia was the national champion and Chellsie was the silver medalist. Chellsie won by only one-one-thousandth of a point. This was not only a monumental moment for Chellsie, this was a milestone for USA Gymnastics. Chellsie was only the third American woman to win an all-around title at a World Championship event and she was the first to win since Shannon Miller in 1994.

Bridget Sloan - London 2009.

Chellsie Memmel’s 2008 Olympic teammate, Bridget was the baby of the team in Beijing at just barely 16 years old. These days, 21-year-old Bridget can be seen competing for the University of Florida and leading them to national championships. In 2009, Bridget was now a veteran on the USA Gymnastics scene. She stealthily won the VISA all-around championships after a steady consistent meet. Bridget did it again a couple months later in London.

The 2012 Olympics were still three years away and the World Championships were being held at the same arena where the Olympics would be held in 2012. For most of the meet, Bridget stayed second behind teammate, Rebecca Bross during much of the all-around. Rebecca wowed everyone with her beautiful gymnastics and difficult and stylish routines. Bridget stayed cool and calm with clean, consistent routines, but she was never far from catching up to Rebecca. On the last rotation, the floor exercise, Rebecca was this-close to taking the gold from Bridget’s hands, but a stumble on floor exercise provided the window of opportunity that Bridget needed. She grabbed the opportunity and won the all-around by only .05.
