Sage Thompson: "Beaming" Into the Spotlight

If you follow gymnastics on the Gymternet, then perhaps you know about Sage. Sage is a level 10 gymnast from All American Gymnastics in Utah, she started at the age of six, and already, only four years later at the age of ten she is a level 10 gymnast. Sage is in the hopes of qualifying Hopes Pre-Elite, or even Junior Elite this upcoming 2014 season. Sage skipped levels 4 and 6, and at her first level 7 meet, she took 3rd place all around.

If you have seen Sage’s videos you have probably noticed that she has a natural talent for beam. Many girls fear the beam, but for Sage it is her best event! “I love beam because it doesn’t scare me and it comes the most naturally,” says Sage. It comes naturally all right. At eight years old, only two years after Sage started gymnastics she learned a back handspring back layout step out on the balance beam. Shortly after she learned that, she learned a front aerial connected to a back handspring layout step out on high beam! Right now Sage has her side aerial connected to a side somi, a back handspring layout step out connected to another layout step out, and a two and a half twisting dismount off beam!

Sage may have a knack for the balance beam, but that does not stop her at being amazing on vault, bars, and floor! Sage is only 4 feet 3 inches tall, but that does not stop her from doing a full twisting yurchenko vault, and trains a 1 1/2 into the pit. On bars she has her pac salto, a full-out dismount, and is close to catching her geinger. On floor she has her double pike, her triple twist, her full-in on the rod floor, and a 1 and a half to a 2 in a half.

Sage October Training 2013: Age 10

Sage definitely aspires to compete at the elite level, and someday go to the Olympics! She is not age eligible for Rio 2016, but she is age eligible for Tokyo 2020! Sage also aspires to compete in college gymnastics, she is not exactly sure what college she wants to go to for gymnastics, but right now she really likes University of Utah, UCLA, and University of Florida. Sage does not have one particular favorite gymnast; she has a whole bunch! “My favorite gymnast on floor is Simone Biles because she’s super powerful and fights on her passes. I like Gabby Douglas on bars because her release moves are so high and has good form! My favorite gymnast on beam is Kyla Ross because she’s so consistent and solid in her skills and has great form. Also Nastia Liukin on beam because of her leaps and jumps, they are so pretty. On vault my favorite gymnast is McKayla Maroney because she has a super good, powerful block, a fast run, and her landings are really good!” Says Sage.
