Artistic Floor Performances 2013 - My Top Ten

As a former dancer, I have a firm belief in the importance of expressive, creative choreography in a gymnastics floor routine. Here is my list of top ten routines that put the artistry back in artistic gymnastics last year:

10: Carlotta Ferlito - Italy - Glasgow World Cup 2013
Ok, she fell on her last tumble, but I don't feel like this took away from the artistic quality of the performance. I love her new floor music, a Lady Gaga song from the Puss in Boots movie, and you could tell she really tried to enthuse the audience with her dance.

9: Vasiliki Millousi - Greece - World Championships 2013
Millousi's movements are mature and balletic; she always delivers a pleasing, graceful routine.

8: Ruby Harrold - Great Britain - Glasgow World Cup 2013
Ruby's routine is choreographed to a really modern, upbeat piece, with some vocals  to stand out from the rest. Lots of wonderful dance!

7: Sydney Johnson Scharpf - USA - Nastia Liukin Cup 2013
Another confident USA junior floor worker! This girl really knows how to draw in a crowd.

6: Kyla Ross - USA - P&G Championships 2013
Ross' improvement in terms of artistry has been greatly acknowledged this past year. Her long, lean physique allows her create beautiful lines on the floor. Watch here.

5: Georgia-Mae Fenton - Great Britain - British Championships 2013
Catherine Lyons' teammate gave an expressive performance with unique, maturely executed choreography. I enjoyed her excellent posture and attention to detail, such as hand and foot positions.

4: Lauren Hernandez - USA - P&G Gymnastics Championships 2013
Lauren's incredible confidence and passion when she dances is wonderful to see, and unusual for a junior gymnast. A pleasure to watch!

3: Larisa Iordache - Romania - World Championships 2013
I just can't get enough of this routine! I adore how Iordache puts equally as much energy into her choreography as her tumbling passes, making for some hugely dynamic and exciting work. Watch here.

2: Catherine Lyons - Great Britain - British Championships 2013
This routine has received a lot of very well-deserved attention. Junior British gymnast Catherine Lyons' floor routine captivated the British Championship audience, as it was comparable to a professional lyrical dance performance. Watch here.

1: Enus Mariani - Italy - Jesolo Trophy 2013
My favourite choreography of the year goes to junior gymnast Enus Mariani from Italy. Her dramatic routine in Jesolo was stunning and exuded elegance from start to finish. Well worth a watch.

So there it is, my top 10 favourite floor routines of 2013! Every single one is worth a watch!
I'd love to know if you like any of these as much as I do, or if you have any other personal favourites!

Thank you for reading, let's hope 2014 displays some more great choreography!
