Jordyn Wieber Not Planning On Rio

Jordyn Wieber does not plan to try for the 2016 Rio Olympic team, according to a report from the Lansing State Journal. This decision likely announces the end of Wieber's career.

Wieber is currently a student at UCLA as well as the gymnastics team manager. Wieber hasn't competed since the 2012 London Olympics but in July, Wieber stated she was still undecided on a gymnastics return

While Wieber's career may not have ended the way she would have chosen, she is still one of the most decorated and idolized U.S. gymnasts. Wieber and Shannon Miller are the only American gymnasts to win World Championships individual all-around gold medals and Olympic team golds. Wieber has an adoring fan base and during 2012, "Wieber Fever" swept the nation.

In 2011, her first year as a senior, Wieber won the American Cup, U.S. Championships, and went on to win all-around at the World Championships. In 2012, Wieber again won the American Cup and U.S. Championships. She placed second to Gabby Douglas at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

At the Olympics, Wieber placed fourth in all-around qualifications, but third among Americans. Because of the two per country rule, teammates Douglas and Aly Raisman moved on to the all-around finals without Wieber. However, Wieber proved resiliency as she was a key contributor to USA's team gold.

The other four members from the 2012 Olympic team are all aiming for Rio. Kyla Ross has been competing consistently the past two years and has won multiple international competitions as well as two World all-around medals. McKayla Maroney competed at the 2013 World Championships where she won gold on vault but had knee surgery shortly after and is still recovering. Raisman and Douglas were both recently added to the U.S. National Team

If any of the Fierce Five make the 2016 Olympic team, they would be the first US female gymnast to compete in back-to-back Olympics since Dominique Dawes and Amy Chow in 1996 and 2000.
