Viktoria Komova Returns to International Competition

This past weekend, Russia's Viktoria Komova returned to and dominated her first international competition since the 2012 Olympic Games. Komova won gold all-around with a 55.9 at the KSI-Matsz Cup on Nov. 15 and 16 in Budapest, Hungary. She also won gold on bars and beam and won silver on floor. See full results here.

Komova showed gorgeous, clean lines and solid skills but has not returned to full Olympic form. The highlight of her competition was bars, her historically strongest event, where she executed two solid routines, one in qualifications and one in event finals. Her routine included the Komova I and Komova II-  in bar stalder Shaposh and in bar stalder Shaposh with a half turn. She also performed a floaty piked Jeager that was nearly a layout, a high Tkatchev, and a solid full in dismount. Watch her bar routine from event finals below where she scored a 15.15 with a 6.5 D score.

On vault, beam, and floor, Komova performed watered down routines but with great form and consistency. Watch Komova's beam routine from event finals here that scored a 13.3 with a 4.9 D score. Watch her floor routine from event finals below that scored a 13.7 with a 4.7 D score.

Since 2012, Komova has been missing from major international competitions due to injuries and illnesses. At the 2012 Olympic Games, American Gabby Douglas edged out Komova in the all-around finals and Komova finished with the silver medal. In 2013, Komova suffered an ongoing back injury and after finally returning to the gym, she was hospitalized shortly after for viral meningitis.

Komova successfully returned to competition at the 2014 Russian Championships in April. She had gone through a noticeable growth spurt and had to adjust her gymnastics accordingly, but still displayed her infamous elegance. Komova initially made the European Championships team, but had to withdraw due to an ankle injury. In June, Russian head coach Andrei Rodionenko had high hopes for Komova, saying that he believed her experience and level would give her a good shot at the 2014 World Championships team. However, Komova had not returned to full health by September and did not make the Worlds team.

Before this weekend's competiton, Komova was most recently seen at Mexico’s Gala of Gymnastics Stars in October. This Gala is not an actual competition but a show where gymnasts can put on a performance while executing some of their best skills. Watch Komova's floor performance from the Gala here

Komova is one of Russia's most experienced and talented gymnasts. Once she regains full difficulty and returns to top form, she will return to being a crucial member of Russia's team and one of the World's top competitors.
