Rachel Gowey aims for World Championship Team

Senior National Team member Rachel Gowey trains at Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute with Liang Chow and Liwen Zhuang. Is Rachel a gymnast that Martha will be watching for the World Championship Team?

At the 2014 Secret Classic earlier this month, Rachel finished 3rd on balance beam, 4th all-around, 5th on floor, and 7th on bars. This was Rachel’s first time competing at the Secret Classic and on a podium. She did unveil and perform some new skills and upgrades to her routine in preparation for Championships. Rachel upgraded her vault to an Amanar (2 ½) twist, which she did have some difficulty with and she put her hand back on the landing. Rachel also added an upgraded beam dismount of a triple full along with adding a 3 ½ twist to open her routine on floor. Both of these upgrades Rachel was able to complete however struggled with control and execution.

Rachel’s Chances
As history seems to repeat itself, Chow has another gymnast in the mix for a World Championship team. Now that Rachel has one meet under her belt with upgrades, and more practice time, consistency is going to be key for her. Can she show improvement on new skills and better execution? Rachel admitted herself in an interview with gymnastike that she was nervous, held back and played her vault conservative. Rachel will need to prove that she has gotten better since Classics and can hit when the pressure is on to make the World Championship team. Rachel was a member of the 2014 Jesolo team where she placed 5th in the all-around. During this meet she gained a lot of experience with international competition that will be important for the World Championships stage.

Where would Rachel fit into the World Championship Team?
Rachel could be a strong asset to the United States on the World Championship team. She is continuing to show progress and improvements along with continuing to prove that she is a hard worker. Her consistent scores on all four events could be vital to the team score for qualification. Rachel has been continuing to impress those around her and could be a gymnast on the rise for the World Championship team.
