Beyond the Routine is breaking into new territory! In our next series, we feature a male gymnast for the first time ever. This series gives you an inside look at Olympian, NCAA champion, and America’s heartthrob Sam Mikulak.

 

This two part series looks at Sam’s past, present, and future. Sam tells us how he got started in gymnastics and why he chose Michigan. He tells us about his incredible Olympic experience as well as his NCAA career, where he won three individual all-around titles and lead Michigan to back to back National team titles. And finally, he gives us a training update and looks towards his future.

 

Sam completed his four years of eligibility at Michigan this spring, but he is nowhere near done with his gymnastics career. He will continue to train with Michigan coach Kurt Golder and in just a couple weeks, Sam will be competing at the P&G Championships looking to defend his national title. Sam’s longer term goal is the 2016 Olympics and he is aiming to be in peak condition with new skills in his routines by then.

 

Sam is arguably the best US male gymnast right now, but he is also one of America’s favorites. He captured hearts at the 2012 Olympics with his calm and cool personality, and not to mention his good looks. After the Olympics, he gained a large fan base and reached over 100,000 twitter followers. Wherever Sam competes, you can expect to see “Will you marry me?” signs in the audience. 

 

While Sam gets a lot of attention, he doesn’t let it get to his head. He makes a point to recognize all of his fans and tries to never turn down an autograph. He has maintained his laid back California vibe as well as his hometown friends.
