Great Britain selects team for European Championships


Earlier today British Gymnastics announced the female gymnasts selected to compete for Great Britain at the 2014 artistic gymnastics European Championships held in Sofia from the 12-25th May.

The senior team features a mix of experienced Olympians and up and coming stars hoping to make their mark on the big stage.

2014 British Champion and London Olympian Rebecca Tunney from the City of Liverpool will compete alongside her club teammate, double Olympian and double European bronze medallist, Hannah Whelan. Rebecca and Hannah are joined by World uneven bar finalists Ruby Harrold (The Academy) and Rebecca Downie (Notts) with 2014 British all-around bronze medallist Claudia Fragapane (Bristol Hawks) making her senior major championship debut, completing the line-up

A five strong junior team will be looking to impress in Sofia and improve upon the teams historic 4th place finish in 2012.

2014 British junior champion, Amy Tinkler (South Durham) is joined by 2013 European Youth Olympic vault champion, Ellie Downie (Notts) sister of senior gymnast Becky. 2013 Australian Youth Olympic beam champion Teal Grindle (Sapphire), 2013 UK School Games six time gold medallist Catherine Lyons (Europa) and 2013 Olympic Hopes Cup champion, Rhyannon Jones (Park Wrekin) complete the team.

The 2014 European Championships includes competitions for women and men, senior and juniors. The first week of action from 14-18th May includes the women’s’ junior all-around and apparatus events and senior team and apparatus events with the men’s competitions taking place from the 21st-25th - the British men’s team will be confirmed week beginning 6th May.
