#9 Stanford Edges out #8 Georgia


Stanford with a well improved performance from last week, rallies from behind to beat Georgia 196.325 to 196.15.

Stanford started off their first home meet of the year on vault by scoring 48.775. Stanford was lead by Melissa Chuang with a 9.8, followed by a trio of 9.75s from Rachel Daum, Pauline Hanset and Taylor Rice. Stanford rebounded on bars scoring a 49.1. Stanford was lead by Samantha Shapiro and Kristina Vaculik both scoring a 9.875.  Stanford moved to the balance beam where they started off strong with a 9.825 from Morgan, Rice and Vaculik followed with a 9.85. Senior Amanda Spinner nailed her routine by posting the highest score of a 9.875. Stanford was able to overtake the lead with a solid team score of 49.2. The Cardinals took a .075 lead to floor where they were able to gain momentum and overtake the Bulldogs with a 49.25 on floor. Pauline Hanset and Kristina Vaculik hit key routines, scoring a 9.875. Taylor Rice hit a stellar routine to help her team win a big meet at home along with sealing herself the all-around title. 


Georgia with their second meet this weekend was looking to come away with a road win and earn another solid road score.

Georgia began the afternoon on bars scoring a 49.325 as a team and took an early lead over Stanford. Chelsea Davis lead with a 9.925 followed by Lindsey Cheek with a 9.9. Georgia moved to bars where they extended their lead by posting a 49.0. Georgia was again lead by Cheek with a 9.9 followed by Davis with a 9.825. Georgia lost momentum and the lead by posting a disappointing floor score of 48. 675. Brandie Jay closed out the rotation with the teams highest score with a 9.85. Georgia continued to open the door with an unfortunate fall from Brittany Rogers. Mary Beth Box and Lindsay Cheek sparked the rotation with scores of 9.875. Kaylan Earls rounded out the rotation with a great routine scoring a 9.875. Georgia was able to post a respectable team score of 49.15 on beam. Their solid beam performance was not enough to surpass the strong finish of Stanford. The bulldogs fall for the second straight meet this weekend with a score of 196.15.

Taylor Rice won the all-around with a 49.325. Georgia took home two event titles, Lindsey Cheek on vault (9.9) and Chelsea Davis on bars (9.925). There was a four way tie on beam with a 9.875 (Cheek, Earls, Box and Spinner). Taylor Rice took home the floor title with a 9.9.

Georgia travels back home to take on LSU on Friday, January 17th at 7:30 pm. Stanford will remain at home next week taking on Arizona and Sacramento State on Sunday, January 19th at 2pm.
