#18 Denver Posts Top Season Opening Score since 2010 in Win Over #22 Cal


The #18 preseason ranked University of Denver opened up the 2014 season posting a 195.200 to top #22 California in front of a home crowd. Denver earned its highest score in a season opener since 2010. In their second meet of the season, Cal finished with a rather disappointing 193.225. Last weekend, they posted a 194.650 in their loss to Stanford.

“I thought they did a nice job,” Denver head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart said. “I think we have a lot of room for improvement, but overall very pleased. If the season opener was a 195 with those mistakes, I think we’re looking at a successful season.”

The Pioneers began the meet with a 48.925 on vault, led by a pair of seniors who have anchored the vault line-up the past two years. Moriah Martin, the individual vault champion and 2013 All-American, posted a 9.875, while classmate Kaitlin Moorhead received a 9.850.

Martin also led Denver on bars, posting a 9.850, but Cal senior Alicia Asturias came away with the event title with a 9.875. After the second rotation, Denver led by just .125 with a total score of 97.450.

The Bears really struggled in the final two rotations and were forced to count falls on both beam and floor. Denver easily clinched the meet title on floor highlighted by Nina McGee's meet high 9.925 for her crowd pleasing routine. 

Cal's Alicia Asturias won her second consecutive all around title with a 31.125.
