Al Fong Reacts to Controversy

Coach Al Fong of GAGE reacts to the demotion of Brenna Dowell at this year's World Championships. Dowell was expected to compete as a bars and beam specialist at the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp until fellow team member McKayla Maroney was promoted to an all around competitor. World Championship rules dictate that only three athletes from each country may compete on each event, meaning Dowell was bumped to an alternate position.

Fong expressed his frustration with the decision in a recent blog post. Fong writes, "Brenna's milestone of making the World team was a huge accomplishment. Everyone agrees Brenna should have been selected to compete and it was her fans' loss including the USA that she wasn't allowed to do so."

Fong made the decision to rest Dowell, opting out of upcoming international assignments. Dowell was invited to defend her title at the Mexican Open Invitational in late November and was also selected to represent Team USA at two World Cup events. Fong writes, "Sorry USAG. You had your chance to let Brenna represent you proudly. Now it's time for a much needed break. "

Fong reminds his readers that gymnastics is supposed to be fun.  "When it becomes fun again, it will mean only one thing. A bright future for a bright star!" writes Fong.
