Oregon State posts a program record team score to upset Utah and UCLA for the 2013 Pac 12 Conference Title!

UCLA was the defending conference champion coming into this weekend's Pac 12 Championships. This is a challenging season for UCLA Head Coach Valorie Kondos-Fields as her Bruins have been hit hard by injuries. The Bruins lost 2008 Olympian Samantha Peszek, former U.S. National Team member Mattie Larson and Canadian star Peng Peng Lee.

 After the first rotation of the Pac 12 Championships the Bruins  were in the lead. UCLA had  an outstanding bar rotation posting a season-high 49.45 but struggled on beam forced to count a 9.525 from Kaelie Baer after a fall by Sophina DeJesus. UCLA bounced back on floor with strong performances including a career-high 9.95 from Olivia Courtney, but their 147.875 total left the Bruins in third place behind Utah's 148.250 and Oregon State's 148.175. Closing the meet on the vault, the Bruins tied their season-best with a 49.5 that included a dramatic9th career perfect 10 for Vanessa Zamarripa and propelled the Bruins into 2nd place.
  

 If anyone was going to upset the Bruins many expected it to be the University of Utah after coming off a stellar regular season finale where they upset #1 Florida. The first three rotations lived up to the hype for Utah and had the team sitting in first place. Unfortunately, Utah ran into problems on the balance beam which dropped them all the way to third. " It's too bad," Utah Coach Greg Marsden said. Marsden also stated that his team needed to be more aggressive on beam.  While Utah didn't perform up to their expectations, the team has shown dramatic improvement throughout the season despite losing Junior Captain Corrie Lothrop for the season when she tore her Achilles. Expect Utah to bounce back at regionals.

Oregon State had a disastrous start to the season suffering losses to Michigan and a rough performance at the Cancun Classic leaving the Beavers  0-2 for the first time since 2004. Certainly a 2013 Pac 12 title for Oregon State did not look very promising. 

"We made too many mistakes, missed too many routines," and "it isn't an indicator of what this team is capable of," said OSU Head Coach Tanya Chaplin after the team's slow start.  

Chaplin knew what she was talking about and in one of the best comeback stories of the season, the #10 Oregon State Beavers are peaking at the right time. Their lights out performance on Saturday night delighted the home crowd and earned the Beaver's a Pac 12 Title. It was an outstanding night as Oregon State picked up its second conference title in three years in a dramatic and exciting night of gymnastics. 

In a thrilling finish to the competition, the Beaver's nailed routine after routine on uneven bars during their final rotation. Sticking every landing, OSU had the roaring home crowd on their feet after setting a new school record of 197.850, and winning an unexpected but well deserved Pac 12 Title.
