No. 1 Ranked Sarah DeMeo Named SEC Gymnastics Specialist of the Week

Alabama gymnastics junior Sarah DeMeo was named the Southeastern Conference Specialist of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday.

“I’m very proud of Sarah and the great start she got off to at Missouri,” UA head coach Sarah Patterson said. “Last weekend was a good indication of the hard work and effort she’s put into preparing for this season.”

DeMeo earned the award, which is in its first year, after winning the uneven bars and balance beam in the Crimson Tide’s season opener at Missouri last Friday. The Overland Park, Kan., native is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation on the uneven bars after scoring a 9.9 to win the event against the Tigers. She tied her career-best uneven bars score, which she set during her freshman season.

She also shared top honors on the balance beam with fellow junior Kim Jacob, scoring a 9.9 for the victory. DeMeo was second on the floor exercise with a 9.85. It was the first time that she competed on the floor exercise since her freshman year.

DeMeo and her teammates return to action this Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT when they open their home slate against the No. 5 ranked LSU Tigers.
