Great Drills for Correcting Common Errors With Yurchenkos
The Yurchenko vault is a one of the most important skills for upper level gymnasts, but it is also a skill that gives many gymnasts and coaches quite a headache. There are so many key factors that go into performing a strong Yurchenko in all three phases, and the opportunity for mistake commonly presents itself. Poor technique on a Yurchenko causes huge problems for gymnasts and coaches when they attempt to add twists.

So, we consulted Cincinnati Gymnastics Head Coach and U.S. Olympic coach Mary Lee Tracy to break down the vault and demonstrate some drills to help you correct common errors in the skill.

Yurchenko Drills pt. 1
Mary Lee explains why many gymnasts have trouble separating the block from the salto and/or the twist on Yurchenkos.

Yurchenko Drills pt. 2
Mary Lee shares multiple drills here. This first drill really accentuates the hip rising when separating the block from the flip. The second drill is great for opening the shoulders.  She points out that the arms have to travel over the head and underneath the body.  The third drill teaches the gymnast to get back in the hand stand shape and then snap back into a stance.  She then has her gymnast add a twist to the end of this drill.

Yurchenko Drills pt. 3
This drill is all about the round off entry.  Mary Lee points out the mistakes gymnasts commonly make that affect body position on the vault.
