Brenna Dowell won the all-around at this weekend’s Mexican Open. The women’s competition started on vault.  Overall the the level of difficulty on this event  was not comparable to the gymnastics we saw in London. No one attempted an Amanar , but we saw plenty of full twisting yurchenkos.

European champion, Anna Dementyeva, had a rough time on her vault. Her full twisting yurchenko was low, under-rotated, and piked down. Brenna Dowell’s double twisting yurchenko was  most difficult vault of the day.  Dowell was took a large step backward, but the vault was cleaner and more difficult than the rest of the field. She had a clean bar routine that ended with a difficult full twisting double layout.

Brenna Dowell trains at Great American Gymnastics Express with Al Fong. Dowell finished ninth in the all-around at Nationals and Olympic Trials.  Dowell was a member of the Pan American team that won gold in 2010

Donnell Whittenburg represented the US in the men’s competition and finished sixth.  Britain’s Daniel Purvis competed, but downgraded his difficulty in his routines. Ukraine’s Oleg Vernyayev won the men’s all-around.
